ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Did you know the Virginia Heart Institute and its staff have been involved in the introduction to Richmond as well as internationally the following projects many of which were rejected initially?

1966  Coronary Care Unit established as part of Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

1967  Mobile Coronary Care Unit introduced to Richmond – rejected by the community.

1968  Public access defibrillation- rejected by the business community and physicians.

1969  Aggressive management of acute myocardial infarction; i.e. coronary arteriography, thrombolysis, and Nitroprusside

1971  Successful outpatient coronary arteriography at the Medical College of Virginia

1972  Outpatient cardiac specialty institute - Virginia Heart Institute

1974  Early results of outpatient catheterization presented at annual Medical Society of Virginia meeting.

1975  Conservative medical management of critical coronary stenosis

1976  Outpatient cardiac rehabilitation transferred to drug management system.

1980  Beta-Blocker to control ventricular arrhythmias and improve left ventricular function

1988  U.S. Public Health approves outpatient cardiac catheterization as safe in ambulatory facilities and supports Medicare payment.

1990  VHI creates Chest Discomfort Center.
