Founded in 1972 as the first outpatient cardiac hospital in the country, the Virginia Heart Institute is devoted to early diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

Advanced techniques and state of the art diagnostic equipment are provided by the Virginia Heart Institute to assist in the early identification of unsuspected cardiac problems.

Prior to 1972, the Virginia Heart Institute staff introduced CPR for the lay public and the mobile coronary care system for Richmond. However, due to the limited success of such emergency measures, aggressive screening was developed since the first symptom of heart disease is death or myocardial infarction in 60 % of patients.
